Developing Site KPI's & Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs)
Project Overview
At an energy-intensive site, a basic KPI tracked total kWh consumed against output. While this offered a high-level performance measure for corporate reporting, it lacked the depth needed to understand performance drivers or variations year-on-year.
Key Actions and Results
-
Detailed EnPI Development: A range of Energy Performance Indicators (EnPI’s) were developed, covering factors such as production tonnage, product mix, and yield.
-
Data Analysis: Historical data spanning several years was collected and analysed to understand correlations and performance trends.
-
Insightful Metrics: While some factors like weather were found to have minimal impact, others—like yield efficiency and product mix—were clearly linked to energy use.
-
Behavioural Improvements: Insights from EnPI’s enabled process and behaviour changes that reduced energy use without the need for capital investment.
Outcome
The site moved from a generic energy metric to a more specific performance framework. By identifying what truly influenced energy performance, targeted actions could be taken—leading to better efficiency, improved reporting, and cultural change, all without significant cost.
