UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) Compliance

Project Overview
This project involved an energy-intensive site regulated under the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS), established by The Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading Scheme Order 2020 to replace the UK’s participation in the EU ETS. A streamlined compliance framework was developed to align with regulatory deadlines and ease the audit process with bodies such as BSI.

Key Actions and Results

  • Simplified Compliance Calendar
A structured reporting calendar was introduced, making it easier to meet verification deadlines and improving audit readiness while reducing internal resource strain.

  • Efficient Energy Data Capture
Site-level energy data was standardised to enable:

    • Easy transfer and use in capital project assessments

    • ROI calculations based on verified data

    • Real-time targeting of high-impact efficiency opportunities

  • Monthly Carbon Tracking and Budgeting
Emissions were monitored monthly to estimate allowance requirements, enabling the finance team to:

    • Forecast costs accurately ahead of payment notices

    • Integrate carbon costs into routine budgeting cycles

Outcome

  • Streamlined audits with full emissions traceability

  • Investment-grade energy data supporting decarbonisation planning

  • Reduced compliance burden and better cross-functional coordination

  • Accurate forecasting of UK ETS costs, improving financial planning
